One of Our Own Graduates from Police Academy

Congratulations to our very own Ryan Russell for graduating from the academy on February 4, 2015. Ryan started at CSUSM in 2005 as a CSO then became a dispatcher at the department. CSUSM recognized his leadership ability and made an investment in Ryan by putting him through the academy. We are pleased to welcome him back to campus as an officer.

Unsung Heroes Among Us:

Over the past several days, as our University and region have been battling wildfires, many of our own employees have been working tirelessly to ensure the safety and welfare of our campus community. From the first sighting of the flames on the hill, the campus’s Emergency Operations Team jumped into action and activated our Emergency Operations Center where several employees from across campus worked around the clock for several days on end. Through their diligent work and collective efforts, our campus was evacuated, monitored, protected, and made safe for re-inhabiting.

These unsung heroes have done remarkable work and in full-force have truly displayed the FAS Vision statement: every employee is a leader empowered to decide, change, and shape our future. I’d like to highlight two of our exceptional heroes who are shown in the photo below. Sid Alvarez and Larry Russell stepped in and stepped up when our campus needed it most. These brave gentlemen truly displayed what it means to decide, change, and shape our future, and through their actions – they helped save our campus. Many thanks to you, Sid and Larry. And many thanks to our Emergency Operations Team and all who took part in helping our campus and region weather this storm.

A New Mission, Vision, and Values for the FAS Division

In 2008, we embarked on a journey to transform the workplace and through our collective good work, we did just that – we transformed FAS! After five years, I have decided it is time to reinvent ourselves, and as I shared at our last Division Meeting, it is time to refresh our mission, vision, and values.

The new mission, vision, and values are:

FAS Mission:
We provide student and employee support, financial and regulatory guidance, and sustainable growth and development for the campus community.

FAS Vision:
Every employee is a leader empowered to decide, change, and shape our future.

FAS Core Values:
  • Develop tomorrow’s leaders.
  • Embrace diversity.
  • Pursue learning and growth.
  • Think courageously – get to “yes”.
  • Don’t settle – continuously improve.
  • Work hard, have fun, collaborate.
  • Show integrity - do the right thing.
  • Be humble – make a difference.

Through each of these items, we will achieve great things --- build better communities, prepare tomorrow’s leaders, and solve critical issues. I thank you for your commitment to our workplace and for helping shape our future.
