A New Mission, Vision, and Values for the FAS Division

In 2008, we embarked on a journey to transform the workplace and through our collective good work, we did just that – we transformed FAS! After five years, I have decided it is time to reinvent ourselves, and as I shared at our last Division Meeting, it is time to refresh our mission, vision, and values.

The new mission, vision, and values are:

FAS Mission:
We provide student and employee support, financial and regulatory guidance, and sustainable growth and development for the campus community.

FAS Vision:
Every employee is a leader empowered to decide, change, and shape our future.

FAS Core Values:
  • Develop tomorrow’s leaders.
  • Embrace diversity.
  • Pursue learning and growth.
  • Think courageously – get to “yes”.
  • Don’t settle – continuously improve.
  • Work hard, have fun, collaborate.
  • Show integrity - do the right thing.
  • Be humble – make a difference.

Through each of these items, we will achieve great things --- build better communities, prepare tomorrow’s leaders, and solve critical issues. I thank you for your commitment to our workplace and for helping shape our future.

Employee of the Month: Paul Tiglao

Congratulations are in order for Paul Tiglao!

Paul has been recognized as the President’s Employee of the Month for August!! This is an outstanding accomplishment and we are proud to recognize Paul for his great work and outstanding service to the university.

Paul has been with the university since 1992 and currently serves as the Business Systems Analyst in the Systems Operations and Development Department. Over the years, Paul has assisted many employees on campus and most recently played an integral role in bringing the new E-Market program to our campus.  This program assures PCI and cash handling compliance while giving a much more efficient, 24/7 available method of making payments for various types of campus related services. I’m proud to recognize Paul for his outstanding achievements and service to the campus community.

Some of you may know that when I joined CSUSM in 2001 in Student Financial Services, Paul was one of the first employees I had the honor and pleasure of working with.  He was always pleasant, good natured and willing to step up and assist in any way possible.  I remember Jan Cushman saying to me that "Paul is the glue that holds Student Financial Services together". I thank Paul for all of his contributions to Student Financial Services and for the achievements he has and will continue to have in Systems Operations and Development.

Please join me in congratulating Paul for his outstanding achievement!

An Extraordinary Journey

I hope you all have had the opportunity to read the latest article in the NewsCenter: Student Saves a Life on the Way to Class. If you have not had an opportunity yet to read the article, I encourage you to do so. This article highlights, our very own VPFAS Office student assistant, Lindsey Cunningham!

Two years ago, Lindsey provided a cheek swab to the Be the Match booth on the way and it forever changed a life. Long after the cheek swab was forgotten, Lindsey received a call that she is a match for a little boy, who is battling leukemia. Lindsey bravely agreed to donate her bone marrow to a young boy she may never meet.

Lindsey has gone on an extraordinary journey, giving hope to a little boy and his family, and inspiring all of us to help others. We are proud and honored to share her story, as we have watched her courageously go through this process, shuffling priorities and rearranging her schedules, to give a 10-year old boy a second chance at life. She has made more than an impact – she has saved a life.

She is an inspiration to us all.

Happy New Academic Year!

Thank you all who attended Convocation on Thursday, August 22nd. If you were unable to attend, the President’s speech is posted online: http://www.csusm.edu/president/speech/2013/2013Convocation.pdf.
It was wonderful to see you all there as we kick off the new academic year. I hope you will have an opportunity to walk around campus during the first week of classes and take part in the excitement of our students returning for the new school year.
I anticipate another busy and exciting year ahead, and with the start of the new academic year and in the spirit of coming together, we will resume VP’s Coffee Hours. As the President mentioned in her Convocation speech,  we accomplish so much together and I would like to continue the coffee hours to share my perspectives with you and to hear how things are going in your areas and across campus.
I hope you will join me for some great coffee and conversation. As always, I’ll provide you with your favorite Starbucks beverage, and you are welcome to ask me whatever questions are on your mind. I encourage you to attend to hear about what’s happening around campus, ask questions, and share any ideas or thoughts you may have with me and your colleagues.

Coffee Hours will be scheduled monthly and you are welcome to sign up for as many sessions as you choose. Repeat visits are okay by me! The coffee hour meetings are open to all FAS employees who would like to attend; both managers and staff members are welcome!
The first coffee hour will be held in September, so watch your inboxes for an email from me.
